What is NFC?

NFC (NearFieldCommunicaTIon) is a short-range wireless communication technology using the 13.56 MHz band. Although the communication distance is only about 10cm, like the non-contact IC card technology, "just touch" can exchange data between different electronic products.

Unlike a contactless IC card, NFC can communicate in both directions. As long as it is an NFC-enabled product and an IC card, data can be read or written. It can also communicate between portable products such as mobile phones. The data transmission speed is not high, and there are four speeds of 106kbit/second, 212kbit/second, 424kbit/second and 848kbit/second.

The NFC standard only specifies the communication part, including "FeliCa", "TypeA" and "TypeB". There is no way to specify the encryption processing of data. The NFC standard is compatible with the "FeliCa" developed by Sony and the non-contact IC card technology adopted by "Mifare" of NXPSemiconductors in the Netherlands.

For example, the transportation card "Suica" of the East Japan Passenger Railway Company (JR East Japan) and the electronic money "Edy" of Japan BitWallet use the physical layer and encryption processing of FeliCa. FeliCa's wireless part adopts one of NFC's standard specifications "ISO18092", and the high-end middleware responsible for encryption processing is Sony's own independent product.

What is the function of NFC?

NFC has three functions: “card emulation”, “reader emulation” and “inter-product communication (P2P)”.

The first is the card emulation function, which, like its name, is a function that can be used as an IC card and tag. "Wallet phone" is an application example, which can be used to replace cash, tickets and concert tickets. In addition, it can also be used as a Shopping Scorecard (PointCard).

Followed by the reader simulation function. Scan the NFC-enabled mobile phone against the label attached to the poster, and you will get the URL and other information and display the Web site. You can also use the NFC mobile phone to scan the label to get the way to use the restaurant coupon.

Finally, the inter-product communication (P2P) feature allows you to easily exchange email addresses between NFC-enabled phones. Not only mobile phones, but also data exchange with PCs, TVs and digital cameras. Therefore, some people call NFC "Wireless USB."

NFC terminals mainly have three working modes

Active mode

In active mode, the NFC terminal can act as a card reader and issue a radio frequency field to identify and read/write other NFC device information.

2. Passive mode

This mode is exactly the opposite of the active mode. At this time, the NFC terminal is simulated as a card, which only passively responds to the RF field emitted by other devices and is read/written.

3. Two-way mode

In this mode, both parties of the NFC terminal actively send out the RF field to establish peer-to-peer communication. Equivalent to two NFC devices are in active mode.
