Sony was a well-known manufacturer of audio equipment, such as the breakthrough Walkman, long before it entered the game console market. But so far, Sony's expertise in audio seems to have not yet appeared on the PlayStation VR. However, Sony has applied for a related trademark.
Sony has filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office called Sonic Surf VR. The name suggests that Sony's products are related to virtual reality, but its description shows: "Speakers; audio interfaces; communications; computer servers; computer programs for editing sounds."
Most psvr users currently rely on external headphones or earbuds to provide immersive sound effects for virtual reality experiences, or to use third-party devices such as Mantis. The upcoming new version of psvr plans to integrate earplugs, so it is unclear whether Sonic Surf VR is for the latest version of psvr, or the old version of the head display, or as a completely independent product.
Sony applied for this trademark on October 2, 2017, but it takes a certain amount of time for product approval, so it is difficult to predict when the product will be launched.
