The LT3083 is a 3A low dropout linear regulator that can be used in parallel to increase output current or spread heat on surface mount boards. Designed for use as a precision current source and voltage follower, this new regulator is used in many applications that require high current, zero to zero regulation and no heat sink. In addition, the device also pulls out the collector of the pass transistor for low dropout (down to 310mV) operation when used with multiple power supplies.

One of the key features of the LT3083 is its ability to provide a wide output voltage range. With a reference current flowing through a single resistor, the output voltage can be set to any level between 0V and 23V (DD-PAK and TO-220 packages). When using a 10μF capacitor on the output, the LT3083 is stable, and the IC can be stable with small ceramic capacitors, unlike the extra ESR that is common with other regulators.

Internal protection circuitry includes current limiting and thermal limiting. The LT3083 is available in a 16-pin TSSOP package with an exposed pad for better thermal characteristics, a 12-pin 4mm x 4mm DFN package (also with an exposed pad), a 5-lead TO-220 package, and a 5-pin package.
