Linear Technology Introduces Broadband, RF to Digital Micro Module Receiver LTM9013

MILPITAS, CA – April 15, 2013 – Linear Technology CorporaTIon launches broadband, RF to digital micromodule (µModule®) receiver LTM9013, which includes high performance Dual 14-bit, 310Msps analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a high IIP3 I / Q demodulator, two variable gain amplifiers, and a 300MHz low-pass filter. The LTM9013's quadrature sampling architecture allows data acquisition with a signal bandwidth of up to 300MHz, while providing 66dB of IMD3 performance over the entire frequency band. The receiver is used in broadband, low IF receivers, and wireless base stations that use digital predistortion (DPD) to linearize power amplifiers (PA). LTM9013 leverages Linear Technology ’s years of application design expertise to provide high integration, ease of use, and repeatable and guaranteed system performance, which can increase production and shorten time to market.

Due to the increasing demand for data from mobile users, a new generation of base stations is now designed to achieve a much higher transmission bandwidth of up to 60MHz. In order to linearize the transmission bandwidth up to 60MHz, the predistortion feedback loop used in the linearization algorithm must acquire the 5th order intermodulation components up to 300MHz. Digitizing 5th order intermodulation distortion requires a receiver with very wide bandwidth, low noise, and extremely flat passband. The LTM9013 includes a 300MHz low-pass filter with a passband ripple of less than 1.3dB over the entire frequency band. Because DPD is a feedback loop, the receiver (also known as the "transmit observation path receiver") can benefit from low latency; the faster loop can produce better efficiency in the PA, which is further reduced Power consumption. The ADC in the LTM9013 has only a delay of 5 clock cycles.

The LTM9013 is packaged in a space-saving 15mm x 15mm ball grid array (BGA) package and uses a multi-layer substrate to shield sensitive analog lines from digital traces to minimize digital feedback. The power supply and reference bypass capacitor are placed in a miniature module package and are tightly coupled to the chip. Compared to traditional packages, the LTM9013 package has the advantages of space saving, cost reduction and performance improvement.
