Powerful wiliVR, no laser, wear VR helmet to improve vision

There is still a long way to go before virtual reality (VR) becomes the mainstream of technology. But last year, after Facebook bought $2 million for VR helmet maker Oculus, it marked that virtual reality is no longer a science fiction, and it has opened up crazy experiments.

James Blaha has been plagued by strabismus, and virtual reality has provided him with a potential cure, so he set up a venture capital-backed company on this prospect.

Over the years, Blaha has considered a number of ways to fix his condition, including using two projections to send different photos to his two eyes, helping to enhance the function of poorly-sighted eyes. When the Oculus Rift development kit came out, he realized that Oculus' helmet could do what he wanted without the need for many activities (activities: you don't have?).

He said: "When I started the experiment, I didn't experience any stereo vision." Two years ago, his poor eyesight had a 20/70 eyesight after wearing glasses. (This number means that a person standing 20 feet away to let him see, he can see that the best distance for this person is 70 feet.) In July, his stereoscopic vision increased by 80%. His eyesight was 20/20 after putting on his glasses.

Arvind Gupta, an investor from SOSVentures, invested $700,000 in Blaha's company See Vividly. "This is something new under the leadership of virtual reality technology. I think it's amazing." He thinks Blaha's company is the most The point that attracted him was that the company found the answer to the previously unsolved question.

The technology is not yet mature, but investors are willing to gamble on his company, See Vividly, on the changes that Blaha has changed. At the University of California, San Francisco, a nine-month trial involving 50-60 people was just one-third of the time. After the trial, people could clearly see the actual effect of See Vividly's software Vivid Vision. Blaha said the trials so far are in line with their expectations. Earlier this year, in a small trial in Slovakia, 9 of the 15 participants had a significant improvement in amblyopia. (Blaha's strabismus is also a form of amblyopia.)

These results are changing the perspective of ophthalmologists on adult amblyopia. The traditional method of treating amblyopia - covering the eyes with better vision to exercise amblyopia - works better in young children.

Gupta said: "What's interesting is that my sister is an ophthalmologist. She told me that science shows that this is impossible. The brain doesn't have enough plasticity to change. But we found that it is not the case... now we need to be optimistic Attitude, find which kind of amblyopia can be cured."

Blaha's final idea was to apply See Vividly's software directly to the patient, but it is still being tested in the US vision treatment clinic equipped with the Oculus Rift development kit. He said: "The main reason is that the current hardware is not for the consumer market. A normal person can not buy it and spend a lot of time to set it up." The test software requirements are Oculus helmet, somatosensory controller (can track the natural movement of the hand) ), game controllers and high-end desktop computers.

The company plans to sell its first consumer helmet-release home version of the software at the beginning of Oculus 2016. Blaha said: "Virtual reality technology is in a useful but not ideal phase. But overall, I think this technology is getting better and faster."

Oculus, Sony and Valve's upcoming virtual reality helmets are designed primarily for hardcore game enthusiasts, but Blaha's company tells us that virtual reality technology can revolutionize every industry.
