The 5G bearer brings significant changes to the optical module.

Wang Guangquan said that the 5G bearer brings different changes to the optical module. In the prequel, high-speed service access such as 10Gb/s and 25Gb/s, a large number of remote base stations generate a large demand for accessing the backbone fiber; the service requires low latency of the network; different rates and different wavelengths are adaptive, and the maintenance cost needs to be reduced. Simple maintenance and management capabilities for optical modules; need to reduce power consumption, adapt to different working environments such as towers, roadsides, indoors, and industrial-grade product reliability requirements;

In the middle pass, the macro base station high-speed service interface makes the access line line-speed bandwidth increase rapidly, and needs to consider both service convergence and network scalability; BBU pooling makes WDM technology sink to macro base station access, and WDM system line rate selection becomes the focus From the perspective of operation and maintenance and cost, it is inevitable to reduce the types of WDM system line interfaces.

In the backhaul, the rapid increase of the bandwidth of the base station access service makes the backhaul service reach hundreds of Gb/s and several Tb/s, and the WDM system application has become the norm; the low-cost 100G/400G WDM system will be scaled.

How to realize multi-service access and service capability supply based on the same basic network, make full use of optical fiber resources, improve the effectiveness of CAPEX investment, reduce the depreciation and invalid precipitation of fixed assets, and maximize the utilization of optical fiber resources? It is a question that needs to be carefully considered in the investment of the operator's basic network.

In Wang Guangquan's view, this first requires a long-term view of the effectiveness and rationality of the investment, and fully considers the impact of future technological development on fiber resources, rather than simply considering the use of fiber to solve all access problems in the access layer network; second, the basic resources After co-construction and sharing, and attributed to the company, considering the rental expenses and other factors, it is urgent to improve the utilization of basic resources. Finally, the sinking of WDM technology has become a consensus, introducing WDM at the edge of the metro network, reducing the consumption of fiber resources and improving the core. Utilization and lowering the network are important trends in the development of metropolitan area networks.

"Using unified ultra-wideband connectivity as an opportunity to break the barriers to fixed-shift networks and build a fixed- and mobile-integrated metropolitan infrastructure system, the basic network resources can be effectively shared. The implementation of solid-mobile convergence and integrated service access strategies includes China. The inevitable choice of domestic and foreign integrated service operators to develop ultra-broadband networks, such as Unicom.

Apply different rate optical modules for different scenarios.

After years of network construction, operators have formed a relatively stable metropolitan area network structure. At present, the fiber-optic direct drive RRU is the main construction mode. A single S111 station requires a direct connection of 6-core fiber between the DU and the AAU. The single-fiber bidirectional requires 3 cores. The construction and maintenance management are relatively simple and can meet the performance requirements of the front-end interface; The consumption of metro access trunk cables and access distribution cables is large, especially for access to trunk cables. It is a more economically viable option when the cable core capacity allows. However, the construction of the access trunk cable involves the resources of the office and the hole, which is difficult to obtain and costly, especially in dense urban areas.

Based on the pre-transmission networking of WDM optical modules, tunable laser technology is used to implement the port-independent function of ITU-T G.698.4 (formerly G.metro), which is dominated by China Unicom. The system can automatically convert its optical module wavelength. Adjust to the OD/OM or OADM port to which it is connected; the optical module only needs to be correctly connected to the port, and it can work normally after power-on, without wavelength configuration; greatly simplify network construction, operation and maintenance, and reduce the variety and quantity of spare parts.

Regarding the demand for 5G medium/return optical modules, Wang Guangquan pointed out that in the access layer, considering the difference in the centralization of the current network BBU, high-speed DWDM systems, such as 100G PAM4, are used in areas with high concentration. 40km; in areas with low concentration, 10G/25G DWDM or other technical networking can be used, and whether tunable technology is required depends on the application scenario.

At the core aggregation layer, the upper-layer IP network is carried by 100G DWDM, and low-cost metropolitan 100G technology can be used. The working distance is within 100km, or can be subdivided into 40km and 100km (depending on cost difference and impact on network maintenance). , including low-cost coherent and non-coherent technologies based on silicon light integration, sharing the industry chain with metro data center optical interconnects.

Considering the needs of network operation and maintenance, it is recommended to minimize the type of WDM line interface rate when the price of optical modules is not much different.

Hope that 25G tunable optical modules will be industrialized as soon as possible

When summarizing the application recommendations of optical modules in 5G bearers, Wang Guangquan said that the types of service optical interfaces should fully meet the different needs of the service side. In the prequel, 10Gb/s and 25Gb/s are recommended to use tunable optical transceiver modules to cope with the problem of insufficient fiber. The low-cost line rate optical module solves the network cost and service development problems after the WDM sinks; in the backhaul, the coherent or non-coherent 100G, 400G and higher rate optical modules meet the high-speed WDM system transmission.

"10Gb/s, 25Gb/s tunable lasers are used in mobile pre-transmission and will be used this year or next year. China Unicom will also carry out laboratory and current network verification of related products from July this year. Although the current optical module manufacturers I have encountered various difficulties such as dispersion and power budget, but I believe that optical module manufacturers can overcome it, and hope that 25G tunable optical modules can realize scale industrialization as soon as possible." Wang Guangquan said.
