These applications are typically powered by two series-connected batteries and also require recharging to provide sufficient power. To date, the development of USB Type-C products powered by two series-connected battery packs requires multiple external discrete components, which not only increases bill of materials (BOM) costs, but also introduces additional points of failure in the circuit.

The MAX14748 integrates a charger, USB Type-C charger detection, 28V overvoltage protection, and power-supply circuitry on a single chip, dramatically simplifying design. The highly integrated solution is compatible with traditional USB BC1.2 charging and other non-standard charging requirements, making the USB Type-C charging power twice that of the Micro USB solution. The programmable automatic input current limit (AICL) function protects valuable terminal equipment by taking full advantage of the maximum current of the charging adapter while ensuring safety.
