According to a recent survey by market research firm Parks Associates, in the US market, Amazon FireTV set-top boxes have become more popular than Apple's. However, Roku is still the leader in the digital streaming media market.
Parks Associates looked at media sales in the United States over the past year. The results show that the total share of Roku, Google, Amazon and Apple in this market reached 86%.
In 2014, Roku and Google Chromecast were among the top four brands, with 34% and 24% share of the streaming media market in the United States.
In 2013, Apple’s share was ranked third. However, due to the rise of Amazon FireTV, Apple has slipped to fourth place last year. FireTV was launched in the spring of 2014, and Apple has been selling AppleTV since 2007.
However, it is worth pointing out that Apple has not released a new version of Apple TV since 2013. So since then, the user’s focus has gradually shifted to new products launched by Roku and Amazon.
Roku, Amazon, and Google offer lower prices than Apple. Roku’s flagship set-top box costs $99, which is higher than AppleTV’s $69. However, Roku also offers a TV stick that costs only $50. In addition, the Amazon Fire TV stick costs $39 (the full FireTV set-top box costs $99), while Chromecast costs $35.
However, although Amazon’s products may have large sales, users use Apple TV more frequently. Parks Associates' research shows that, in terms of usage, Roku is the #1 streaming media set-top box, accounting for 37%. Google Chromecast ranked second with 19%. The Apple TV and Amazon FireTV were 17% and 14%, respectively.
There are recent rumors that Apple is developing a new version of Apple TV, and this product will be more powerful, the interface will be more similar to iOS, and provide a dedicated version of the AppStore. This product is expected to be available in September.
