[Abstract] In addition to supporting Windows desktop software, Snapdragon 835 will also bring Windows 10 PCs the ability to connect to cellular networks.
Eskimo Windows 10 will soon be able to run on ARM processors, which is probably one of the most exciting news Microsoft announced at the WinHEC conference last year. Instead of focusing on Windows 10 Mobile for smartphones, nor is it a severely restricted feature of Windows RT, we're using Windows 10 on a PC.
The first batch of Windows 10 PCs equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 will come out later this year, and Qualcomm has announced more details related to it.
Windows 10's support for the ARM architecture is important because it will enable this operating system to run on a wider variety of device types. ARM processors are generally more energy-efficient than Intel's PC processors, and SoC solutions such as the Snapdragon 835 are equipped with cellular network communications and LTE data connectivity. Due to the increase in battery life, small devices are more suitable for running Windows 10 and provide a reasonable life time.
In fact, Microsoft and Qualcomm have begun to collaborate on the concept of a new "cellular PC" in order to bring LTE data support to ultraportables. According to Qualcomm, the powerful performance of the Snapdragon 835 is sufficient to support both the Windows 10 core system and the simulation engine used to run the desktop software.
Qualcomm said that many mainstream PC makers have already decided to participate in this project. Windows 10 PCs equipped with Xiaolong 835 processor will come later this year. However, these devices basically belong to mid-range products in terms of selling price, and the number will not be much.
Windows 10 PCs with ARM processors are clearly unable to match performance with high-end gaming PCs and workstations equipped with Intel processors, but for most productivity tasks and everyday use, they should have sufficient performance. We can reasonably assume that a PC supporting a cellular network may be about the same size as a smartphone, just like the Microsoft Surface Phone concept we've seen before.
In addition to bringing support for cellular networks, the Snapdragon 835 will also support the Windows 10 Holographic platform, USB, and most PC accessories.
With full support for the Windows desktop software, this new cellular PC platform should be able to avoid the mistakes of Windows RT and bring new PCs that allow users to work anywhere, anytime.
