According to foreign media Forbes website, Apple is very risky to adopt LTE modules from Intel and Qualcomm on its latest iPhone 7 mobile phone, and a recent study shows that there is a difference in performance between the two LTE modules. .
Researchers from Cellular Insights conducted signal performance tests on the iPhone 7 with two LTE modules. In addition to testing handset support for network operators in different countries through different LTE bands, signal strength is also taken into account.
It turns out that in the general use scenario, the Qualcomm version of the iPhone 7 performs 30% better than the Intel version. In the case of weaker signals, the Qualcomm version performed even better, surpassing the latter by 75%.
This result cannot be said to be inconspicuous. Such a clear difference means that consumers may buy a "less-performing" iPhone at a high price without their knowledge. Apple’s strict tradition of quality control is once again facing challenges.
"In this era of mobile internet, signal and wireless connectivity is undoubtedly an important indicator of a mobile phone," said the Cellular Insights blog.
As the most eye-catching mobile phone product in the world, the same module uses two suppliers, and the quality is very controversial. In the previous generation of iPhone 6s, Apple adopted the A9 processor of the two foundries of TSMC and Samsung. After the mobile phone was launched, it was pointed out that there was a 5% to 7% performance difference between the two versions. When the news came out of public opinion, it was called "the chip door." However, Apple said in a subsequent statement that such nuances do not affect the use.
Now iPhone 7 seems to have gone awry. In the past five years, Qualcomm has been the sole supplier of Apple's mobile modem chips. Due to its excellent product quality, many high-end mobile phones today also choose Qualcomm as a supplier on the LTE module. According to industry insiders, Apple has pulled Intel into the LTE supply link of iPhone 7, although there are more price-stacking chips in the face of Qualcomm, but the quality of the uneven or will cause Apple headaches.
As of the date of this writing, Intel and Apple have not responded to this.
