Diode switching and reverse recovery time

PN junction diodes are often used to make electrical switches. In the forward bias state, that is, the open state, a small applied voltage can generate a large current; in the reverse bias state, that is, the off state, only a small current exists in the PN junction. The switching circuit parameter we are most interested in is the switching speed of the circuit. This section will qualitatively discuss the switching transients of the diodes and the storage effect of the charge. An expression describing the switching time is simply given without any mathematical derivation.

Diode switching

By using the characteristics that the positive and negative currents of the diode are very different, the diode can be used as a switch.

When the switch K is turned to A, the diode is in the forward direction, and the current is large, which is equivalent to the switch connected to the power supply connected to the external circuit connected to the load, and the circuit is in the on state (on state);

When the switch K is turned to B, the diode is in the reverse direction, and the reverse current is small, which is equivalent to the switch of the outer circuit being disconnected, and the circuit is in the off state (off state).
