The problem of weak game performance is not Ryzen itself but lack of optimization

[Abstract] The reason why AMD's newly released Ryzen processor has poor game performance is not its own, but the game is not optimized for it. Future optimized games will perform far better on Ryzen than now.

Tencent Digital (Wen Xin) According to the Digital Trends website, slightly lower game performance has affected the enthusiasm of many users to buy AMD's new Ryzen. However, the problem is not in Ryzen itself, but optimization is not enough.

AMD responded to appraisers’ concerns that the new Ryzen—especially the top Ryzen 7 1800X—has performed poorly in game testing, especially at full HD resolution. AMD claims that its new flagship processor game performance is inferior to Intel because the software is not optimized.

In terms of multi-thread support, AMD's new Ryzen processing power is absolutely powerful. In many scenarios where many of its cores and threads can be used, the 1800X is comparable to an Intel processor, and the price is only about one-third of the price of the latter. However, its single-core performance is not strong enough and the game is particularly affected. AMD said that this situation will soon change.

Digital Trends stated that John Taylor, AMD’s vice president of marketing, said in a statement, “The Ryzen processor is not as good as the competitor when running some games at full HD resolution, because the game is for Intel platforms. optimization."

Taylor said that even without optimization, Ryzen processor game performance is still very good, "in the GPU (graphics processor) demanding games, it can provide smooth frame rate and excellent experience."

Taylor said that AMD will provide Ryzen development hardware to more than 300 developers. By the end of 2017, more than 1,000 developers will optimize their games for AMD hardware. He pointed out that game developers such as Oxide Games and Creative Assembly issued a statement saying that the optimized engine running on Ryzen hardware will result in "a significant increase in performance."

Although optimizing the new hardware for a particular game proved to be useful—both AMD and NVIDIA often do this through the release of a new graphics driver, it is difficult to determine that the developer had made many optimizations for Intel hardware in the past few years. It is true that Intel processors have been considered the best choice for gamers for the past 10 years, but this does not mean that no gamers like AMD processors.

Digital Trends stated that, on the other hand, Zen is a new architecture - the first new processor architecture that AMD has introduced for a long time. Games are rarely optimized for multiple cores and threads, and turning off AMD's synchronous multithreading (SMT) can have a significant impact on game performance.

From this point of view, Taylor's argument seems to be credible, but we can't carry out strict proof. If there is a significant increase in Ryzen's game performance over the next few months, we will understand the reasons for its game performance. With the release of the new game, we will find that Ryzen's game performance will be far better than now.
