ZTE helps Indonesian Smartfren test massive MIMO technology

According to foreign media reports, as part of the plan to optimize the development of its 4G LTE-A service, Indonesian mobile operator Smartfren has cooperated with China ZTE to start large-scale multi-input and multi-output (Massive MIMO) and multi-antenna air-division multiplexing access. (SDMA) technology.

ChrisTIan Daigneault, chief technology officer at Smartfren, said the tests were part of the "5G era" preparation and pointed out that massive MIMO and SDMA will help boost peak throughput to 400 Mbps.

Smartfren has conducted the above tests in Jakarta and Surabaya and plans to implement the technology in 100 locations in the third quarter of this year.

The telecom operator intends to migrate users to its 4G network, but found this to be a slow process.

As of the end of June 2016, only 20% of users migrated to LTE, and most people tend to stick to their traditional CDMA services.
