Olympus OLYMPUS is revitalizing its EyeTrek brand for use at the turn of the century to sell a range of head-mounted display devices. Now it launches the new EyeTrek-Insight EI-10, an open-source, enterprise-grade smart eyewear product. The price is 1,500 US dollars.
The El-10 can be mounted on a variety of eyewear. It has a small 640x400 OLED display, just like Google Glass. When users wear this product, it is displayed translucently in front of the user.
A small front-view camera can capture photos and videos and can even playback the shots to the supervisor in real time. The El-10 runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which even has a headphone jack for headphones or a microphone (or both). The El-10 has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips (but no Bluetooth LE). They all use Texas Instruments chips that drive the 8.9-inch 2012 Kindle Fire HD. According to Olympus, the battery life of the El-10 is only 30-60 minutes. However, the 300mAh battery is easily replaced.
The El-10 can be used for SMS presentation where the display shows the content and the operator divides the screen and the other party can capture the view from the camera and use the notes to explain it. Olympus is trying to create a more open, customizable option for the El-10, and of course, Olympus will not prevent ordinary people and consumers from buying this product. The company will sell El-10 on its website and some consumer channels.
